William H. Parker
Memorial services for William H. Parker of San Rafael, an assistant vice president of Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co., will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church, San Rafael. Inurnment will be private.
Parker, 54, died Thursday in a San Francisco hospital after an illness.
He was a native of Illinois, who graduated from Wittenberg College in Springfield, Ohio.
Parker started his telephone career with Illinois Bell in 1949 and was transferred to San Diego in 1952. After serving in various jobs there he was transferred to American Telephone & Telegraph office in New York City for three years, 1962-65.
He then was transferred to Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co. in San Francisco and moved to Marin.
From 1973 to 1978 he was general manager in the East Bay and then became assistant vice president, personnel.
He had been named an honorary citizen of Oakland by Mayor Lionel Wilson and had served on the board of the Oakland Chamber of Commerce. He also was a member of the New Oakland Committee and Spanish Speaking Unity Council in Oakland.
Parker also had been president of the Babe Ruth baseball league in Terra Linda and was active in the Terra Linda Athletic Association and scouting.
He was an Air Force co-pilot from 1943-45.
Parker is survived by his wife, Lois, of San Rafael; four sons, Ralph Parker of Novato and Charles, Richard and Keith Parker, all of San Rafael; and two brothers, Edward Parker of Poway, San Diego County, and Robert Parker of Alta Loma, San Bernardino County.
The family prefers that memorial contributions be made to t he First Presbyterian Church or the Dr. Richard Cohen Cancer Fund, in care of Children’s Hospital, 3700 California St., San Francisco 94118..
