Edward W. Matthews
Edward William Matthews of Novato died Friday at Novato Community Hospital. He was 83.
He was born in French River, Ontario, Canada. He came to the United States as a young man and returned to Canada to serve in the Canadian army during World War II. He returned to the United States in 1948. He worked as an iron molder in Canada and San Rafael. Later, he worked as a maintenance man for the San Rafael School District for 20 years.
He was a member of the Knights of Pythias.
He enjoyed writing short stories.
Mr. Matthews is survived by a daughter, Doreen Putnam of Novato; two sisters, Beatrice Linton and Marie Thomas, both of Canada; a brother, Ross Matthews of Canada; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was to be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Tamalpais Mortuary Chapel, San Rafael. The Rev. John Bray of Marin Covenant Church will officiate.
Inurnment is private.
