Descendent of Big Land Grantee Dies

A Requiem High Mass for Mrs. Mary J. Mossop, a direct descendant of the owner of a 6,658-acre Mexican land grant which is today part of San Anselmo and Fairfax, will be celebrated tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at St. Raphael’s Church, San Rafael.

Mrs. Mossop, 87, died Saturday in a San Francisco hospital after a long illness.

She was the granddaughter of Domingo Sais, who in 1839 was granted the massive Rancho Canada de Herrera by the Mexican governor. Sais had served a two-year term as elector and regidor of San Francisco.

Mrs. Mossop was born on her grandfather’s ranch in San Anselmo. She was married to the late William S. Mossop on her 20th birthday, April 17, 1893. He was in charge of maintenance of the old Pacific Union Country Club in Olema.

Mrs. Mossop is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Josephine Sarantis of San Francisco, and a sister, Mrs. Louise Richsteiner of San Gabriel.

The cortege will assemble tomorrow at 9:15 a.m. at Keaton’s Mortuary, San Rafael. The Rosary will be recited today at 8 p.m. at Keaton’s Chapel. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, San Rafael.
