Lou Hewelcke, Heroic Fireman, Answers The Last Alarm
Lou Hewelcke, for years an engineman on the San Rafael Fire Department, was laid to rest Monday following funeral services held in the mortuary of Keaton and Dusel. Rev. Fr. Geo. A. O’Meara conducted the last rites. The funeral cortege, with an escort of honor from San Rafael Police Department and the California Highway Patrol and members of the fire department, proceeded to the firehouse while the fire bell tolled. There, the firemen entered cars to accompany the cortege to Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Hewelcke was stricken suddenly with a heart attack Friday afternoon while fighting a grass fire at Forbes Ave. and H St. He died shortly after before the ambulance and doctor arrived. Hewelcke was a native of this state.
Deceased is survived by a widow, Mrs. Fannie Hewelcke, a daughter, Mrs. Nelson Faulkner, a son, Louis Henry Hewelcke Jr.
