Hugh Jay Jacks
Businessman and long time Marin County resident, Hugh Jay Jacks, died peacefully at home on June 5th, 2002- one day before his 93rd birthday- after a period of increased frailty. He was born in Nebraska and moved as a child with his family to San Francisco. He attended the London School of Economics and was a graduate of Stanford University. In 1938 he married Ellen Hill. They moved to Ross in 1941. In 1990, an apartment at Smith Ranch in San Rafael became their principal home. He served two terms as mayor of Ross. He was an avid and respected sailor who enjoyed bay and ocean racing and on one occasion was the first in his class in the Trans-Pacific Yacht Race. He was a member of the Saint Francis and San Francisco Yacht Clubs and of the Cruising Club of America. In his later years, he pursued fine woodworking as a hobby and created period piece furniture reproductions of professional quality. He is remembered for his witticisms; that irreverent sense of humor and ability to quip never deserted him. He took great delight in the world at large, in the intellectual challenges associated with economics and finance, in the geography and cultures of the globe, of which he saw much in his travels, and in the company of friends and family. He had a generous and optimistic heart. He was preceded in death by his wife. He is survived by a daughter, Leslie Plant, of Inverness, a son, Tim Jacks of Folsom, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. At his request, no services are planned. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Hospice of Marin. Keatons Mortuary 453-0571.
