JOSEPH R. SMITH, a Marin County man, who has been guard at San Quentin Prison for the past 8 months, died Thursday, August 1st, after an illness of 3 days of peritonitis. The funeral services were conducted on Sunday. He was aged 60 years and was one of the most trusted officers at the prison.
Mr. Smith was a brother of Mrs. Valencia of this city, and was a resident of Bolinas for years.
