Samuel Murray, Ross Valley Pioneer, Dies

Samuel Murray, pioneer resident of Ross and the first chief of the Ross Fire Department, died at his home there Saturday following an illness of five months. He was born in Boston and had lived in California ever since 1860. He was one of San Francisco's pioneer business men, being in the machine works business for 50 years. His company, which went out of existence just a short time ago was known as Murray Brothers Machine Works. The company invented the logging machine and made for many years a specialty of hoisting machinery.

He is survived by one daughter, Miss Adelaide Murray and four sons, Samuel Jr., Harry, Benjamin W. and Leo P. Murray.

The funeral was held this morning in San Francisco. A requiem mass was said at Mission Dolores Church. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery.
