Frank P. Grady, Pioneer San Rafael Businessman Passes At 76 Years

One of San Rafael’s best known pioneer businessmen breathed his last last night at his home following an illness which forced his retirement from business for the past six years. He was Frank P. Grady, founder of the San Rafael Ice Company, the Lucas Valley Dairy, and a veteran of the feed and fuel business.

Born in Ireland in 1871, Frank Patrick Grady came to California and almost immediately to San Rafael when a young man of 25 years to engage in the feed and fuel business at Second and A streets with his brother John and later another brother, James Grady. That was in 1897, just half a century ago.

The partnership was dissolved after a time and in 1920 Frank Grady, who had taken over the entire business, established the ice plant at Fourth and Ida streets. After eight years of that successful business operation, which in recent years was merged with the Ice Delivery Co., Grady engaged in the dairy business operating a large market milk establishment in Lucas Valley. In 1933 Grady branched out into the distribution business, establishing the Lucas Valley Dairy on Ida street.

Upon being physically stricken the latter part of July, 1941, the elder Grady turned over the entire business to his sons Robert and Ed and a daughter, Loretta. While Bob Grady, present president of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce, managed the dairy plant and delivery business, Ed. Grady handled the ranch and producing end of the business until the dairy herds were sold and the Lucas Valley ranch leased, when he joined his brother and sister in the distributing business.

Frank Grady is survived by his widow, Mrs. Rose Grady and two other daughters, Mrs. Margaret Merkley of Dixon and Mrs. Frances Johnson of San Rafael.

Deceased was a member of the San Rafael Elks and San Rafael Council, Knights of Columbus.

The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 9:15 from Keaton’s thence to St. Raphael’s church were a requiem mass will be celebrated commencing at 9:30 o’clock. Burial will take place in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
