Stroke Fatal To Reno Grandi, Prominent West Marin Rancher
Pt. Reyes Merchant Striken In Novato
Death came early this morning to Reno L. Grandi, prominent rancher and merchant of Pt. Reyes Station and member of one west Marin’s pioneer families.
Grandi, 63, suffered a stroke and cerebral hemorrhage at 2 p.m. yesterday while carrying out his duties as assistant vice president at Novato’s Central Valley bank, a post he assumed only a few months ago.
Medical treatment and oxygen failed to revive Grandi, who had been in apparent good health, and he died today at 1:38 a.m. at a local hospital.
He was the son of the late Louis and Agnes Grandi, and was born in 1890 on the 800-acre home ranch near Pt. Reyes Station.
His father came to this country from Switzerland at the age of 17 and soon started the ranch and a general merchandising business at the west Marin town.
Lost ‘Good Citizen’
“We have lost a good citizen – it’s a distinct loss to Marin county,” said Marin Agricultural Commissioner Thomas Peryam, a close friend for 20 years of Grandi who listed among his many activities active membership in the Marin Farm Bureau.
At the time of his unexpected death, Grandi was a trustee of both the Black elementary and Tomales High school districts and chairman of the Marin probation committee.
During his decades of service in agricultural, lodge, business, and civic activities, Grandi was a one-time president of Marin Coast chamber of commerce, a director of the Redwood Empire association, a senior warden of St. Columba’s church at Inverness, and a vice president of the California State chamber of commerce.
In Many Lodges
His fraternal affiliations included membership in Marin lodge number 191, F.&A.M., Mt. Olivet Commandery Knights Templar number 20, Petaluma, and the San Francisco Islam Temple.
Surviving Grandi are his wife, Hilda; a son, Leonard; a sister, Mrs. Lydia Bianchi; a brother, Oliver Grandi.
Another brother, Ennio, until his death three years ago, was a partner in the general store which was turned over to Reno Grandi in 1911 by their father. Other holdings of the Grandi Company, which Grandi operated, was a small ranch below Olema which was sold shortly before World War II.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal church, San Rafael. The Rev. Charles E. Shrewsbury, vicar of Inverness, will conduct the services.
