COLONEL KOWALSKY FORMERLY OF TOMALES

The death of Colonel Henry I. Kowalsky, once advisor to King Leopold of Belgium, in San Francisco last Saturday recalls to the memory of many of the residents of Tomales that Kowalsky, one of the most picturesque characters of the Pacific coast, once lived among them.

About a quarter of a century ago Kowalsky became interested in a mercantile business in Tomales and remained there for some time. He left there and went to San Francisco, where he had lived constantly since, although he had become internationally famous through his reputation as an attorney. He was legal advisor to E. J. (Lucky) Baldwin, and was known among the lawyers of the state as the “Will Breaker.”

Kowalsky’s death was due to heart trouble. He retired to his room late Friday night in the Palace Hotel, where he had lived for many years, and was found dead the next morning. Kowalsky is survived by his brother, Joseph, also an attorney, with offices in San Francisco, and a daughter, Miss Mabel, who lives in Alameda. The Colonel was born in Buffalo, N. Y., and was 56 years of age. He came to California in 1867.
