He was president of Convention Bureau
Chronicle Staff Report

San Francisco -- Peter Goldman, a top executive in the Fairmont and Hyatt hotel chains in San Francisco, died Friday at his Marin County home from complications from Parkinson's disease. He was 81.

Mr. Goldman, who lived in Greenbrae, started as a waiter at the Fairmont Hotel's Venetian Room and over a 30-year career moved into the executive ranks as the Fairmont became a national chain.

Born in Breslau, Germany, he escaped the Nazis by fleeing to Shanghai in 1939. Mr. Goldman met fellow refugee Rose Borowski in Shanghai in 1948 and married her the next year in Paterson, N.J.

Later in 1949, the couple settled in San Francisco and he started at the Fairmont. Mr. Goldman was promoted regularly before being named general manager in 1968. He later was appointed managing director of all the chain's hotels.

In 1979, he left the Fairmont for the Hyatt hotel chain, serving as its regional vice president. He also worked as general manager of the Hyatt Regency Hotel at the Embarcadero Center.

"I was looking for a new challenge," Mr. Goldman said in a 1979 interview. "It keeps you young. . . . In what other business would you deal every day with heads of state, stars of movies and the theater, the people who make headlines every day?"

His work over the years also involved promoting San Francisco as a tourist and convention destination.

Mr. Goldman served on numerous civic and business associations. He was the chairman of the board of the California Hotel Association and president of the San Francisco Convention Bureau.

"He was really an icon for tourism in San Francisco," said his son, David Goldman. "For 40 years, he worked tirelessly to promote the city of San Francisco. . . . He was a very generous, humble man who was loved by all people and will be missed dearly."

Mr. Goldman is survived by his wife, Rose; his brother, Hans of Burlingame; his sons, David of San Francisco and Michael of Urbana, Ill.; his daughters, Vivian McClure and Monica Abrahams of Greenbrae; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Congregation Beth Israel Judea at 625 Brotherhood Way in San Francisco at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Donations can be made in Mr. Goldman's name to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation and Hospice of Marin.
