Henry Goudy, Well-Known Resident, Dies at Tomales

Henry Goudy, pioneer Marin resident and county supervisor for 16 years, died last Thursday at his home in Tomales as the result of a stroke of paralysis which he suffered two days before. He had previously had a stroke two months ago, from which he had not completely recovered. Stricken a second time Tuesday morning, he did not regain consciousness and passed away Thursday afternoon at 5 o’clock.

Born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1846, he came to California by way of the Isthmus of Panama in 1868 and settled near Tomales, where he conducted a large ranch until he retired eight years ago.

In 1898 he was elected to the Board of Supervisors, where he served for 16 years, the last eight as chairman. It was through his economic program that a bond issue of $160,000, a subsidy given by the county to the North Shore Railroad Company to assist in building the line to Point Reyes Station, was retired. The bonds were burned at a ceremony at the Court House in 1912, at which the county was host to hundreds of residents. A parade opened the ceremonies, after which there was a program on the Court House grounds, with refreshments for all.

Mr. Goudy is survived by his wife, Mrs. Susan Goudy; a daughter, Mrs. Sarah G. Parks, of Tomales; a son, Harry A. Goudy, of San Rafael, and two grandchildren, Wilbur and Roy Parks.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Tomales Presbyterian church, with the Rev. G. F. Haerle, pastor of the church, officiating, when hundreds of friends paid their last respects.
