Rev. Frank L. Raney, Presbyterian Pastor
The Rev. Frank L. Raney of Novato, for 29 years the pastor of the Petaluma Presbyterian Church until his retirement 28 years ago, died yesterday in a local hospital after a one-month illness. He was 84.
He was born in Kerrville, Tex. and attended schools in his native state, plus Missouri and California, before serving in the U. S. Navy during World War I.
In 1921 he moved to Marin graduating in 1924 from San Francisco Theological Seminary in San Anselmo. After four years as pastor of the Fulton Presbyterian Church in Sonoma County, he became pastor of the Petaluma church in 1928.
It was during his service in Petaluma that he met and married his wife, the former Jane B. Burns. They celebrated their 25th anniversary in 1971.
The Rev. Mr. Raney retired in 1957 and moved from Petaluma to Novato, but he remained active in church affairs, serving as pastor emeritus of the Petaluma Presbyterian Church.
He was a member of Petaluma Lodge 180, Free and Accepted Masons, the Petaluma chapter of the Royal Arch Masons and the Mt. Olivet Commandery.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Dr. Frank L. Raney Jr. of Mill Valley and Dr. Gus A. Raney of Tiburon, a brother William R. Raney of Cardiff by the Sea, San Diego County, and a sister, Mrs. Joe Slack of Chico, and eight grandchildren.
Private funeral was held today. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Presbyterian Church of Novato and 5 p.m. at the Petaluma Presbyterian Church.
