Edward Tallman, Well Known Contractor, Dies After Eating Shellfish
Fatally poisoned by eating mussels which, according to County Health Office Dr. J. H. Kuser, had been spoiled by exposure to the sun and air. Edward Tallman Jr., well known San Rafael contractor, died early on Monday morning at his home, 200 Shaver street. Tallman sacrificed his life to save that of his wife, Mrs. Komma Tallman, who was also poisoned by the shell fish, and who is now in a critical condition at t he Cottage Hospital.
The mussels were gathered at Pt. Reyes on Sunday and were eaten on the evening of that day. Some hours later Mrs. Tallman became violently ill, and it was while ministering to her that her husband was stricken. Paying no heed to his own suffering, he continued to care for his wife, and it was not until his own suffering became unbearable that he summoned Dr. C. B. Marston.
When the physician arrived he immediately ordered Mrs. Talman (sic) removed to the hospital and bent every effort toward saving the life of her husband. Tallman, however, was past medical aid, and passed away after several hours of intense suffering. The body was removed to Keaton & Dusel’s undertaking parlors.
Besides his wife, the deceased leaves an infant daughter, and he is also survived by his father, Edward Tallman, Sr. Tallman was one of the best known building contractors in Marin county, and among other structures erected by him was the building now occupied by The San Rafael Independent. He was a member of the Masons and of the Marin County Shrine Club.
Mrs. Tallman yesterday was reported in a critical condition at the hospital, but attending physicians express hope that she will recover. Arrangements for Tallman’s funeral are being held in abeyance pending the outcome of his wife’s illness.
