Noble Woman Passes Away
Mrs. F. W. Holland of Tomales Dead

Mrs. Julia Holland, an old and highly respected resident of Tomales, passed away at midday Thursday after a lingering illness. The funeral will take place at 1 p. in. today, Saturday, at Tomales.

After a long, busy and useful life, she died as she had lived - honored, trusted and loved. She reared her own monument while she lived in the hearts of all who knew her. Her life was completed if work all done and well done constitutes completion. Her Christian life was beautiful from its beginning to its close and through all the vicissitudes and sorrows that she met in her way, her faith in God never wavered. But she has left us and to-day the autumn leaves fall upon another grave that hides from our sight all that is mortal of a true and noble woman.

She leaves behind her a husband, F. W. Holland, a prominent merchant, and the following children: Mrs. Dr. T. B. Reardon of Oroville, Mrs. W. P. Hundley and Mrs. D. S. Hornung of Sun Francisco, Miss Mabel Holland, Marin County Court Reporter, and Frank S. Holland, Deputy County Clerk of Marin.

Death of Mrs. Holland

There is sorrow in Tomales today, for one of its oldest pioneers and best known residents has passed away. For nearly half a century, a familiar figure in the little town has been the person of Mrs. Frank W. Holland, mother of the Deputy County Clerk, and wife of one of the pioneer merchants of the county, but after a brief illness she is gone, and her family and friends are gathering around her bier to pay the last sad ceremonies to one they knew and loved so well.

It is 43 years since Frank W. Holland and his young wife took up their residence in Tomales, and the husband opened a merchandise store. The Civil War on in the East, and California was a terra incognita to the world at large. There were trials and obstacles to overcome, but with the indomitable spirit which belongs to all those of New England stock (Mrs. Holland was a native of Chelsea, MA) she met the obligations and duties imposed upon her, brought up her children to be a credit to herself and themselves, and found in her home and its interests, all the occupation and recreation she needed, without worrying herself with clubs, or politics, or suggestive dramas and novels. Without being a great woman, she was something better – a good mother, a good wife, a good neighbor, and those who sorrow at her grave do so because they knew and loved her.

Her funeral takes place Saturday from her home at Tomales. She leaves to mourn her loss a devoted husband, and a son and 4 daughters – Mrs. Dr. Reardon, Miss Mable Holland, Mrs. Handley, and Mrs. Hornung, who have the sincere sympathy of all who knew the mother and know them.
