Death of Samuel Clark

Captain Samuel Clark, one of the early pioneers of Bolinas, died suddenly at his home Wednesday, August 20th. Old age was probably the real cause of his death. The funeral was held Saturday.

Samuel Clark was born in Erie County, Penn., September 9, 1827, and was almost 75 years of age at the time of his death. When 14 years of age he went to New York and shipped on board a vessel for Liverpool, and continued a seafaring life until the fall of 1852, when he arrived in San Francisco. Suffering from Panama fever, he went to a hospital at Washington, Yolo County. After recovering he went to Bolinas in the spring of 1853 and engaged in boating and fishing until 1855, when he went to Arizona and followed steamboating on the Colorado River for one year, then returned to Bolinas for a permanent location.

He always took a prominent part in public affairs; was elected constable in 1856, and in 1857 was chosen as supervisor for his district, serving for 3 years, and was again elected in 1873 for another 3 years. He also served as justice of the peace and for many years was school trustee.

The Marin County history, published in 1880, says: Captain Samuel Clark has always been a public spirited and enterprising gentleman, and in Captain Clark is to be found one of natures true nobleman, plain, unassuming, honest, truthful - in truth, a very gentleman.

He was married June 22, 1867, to Miss Frances Nott, who was born at Bolinas in 1851.

Captain Clark was an old line Republican and took an interest in county politics up to the time of his death, having served on the committee on resolutions in the late Republican county convention.

Coroner Eden held an inquest and the jury returned a verdict that death was the result of natural causes.

Mr. Clark was an Odd Fellow and a Druid. Several members of the orders went over from San Rafael to attend the funeral.
