Sudden Death of an Old Citizen

A sad episode of the fire early yesterday morning was the death of our old neighbor, Ludwig Haffner, at the age of 74 years. His physician says that for years he has suffered with alarming paroxisms from enlargement of the heart. Such a seizure occurred a few days since, from which he rallied, and was out about town during Thursday in good spirits. Soon after midnight, being aroused out of a sound sleep by the cry of fire and the great glare from the blazing buildings nearby, insisted on getting up and dressing himself. He wanted to help fight the fire. All this was too much for him, and soon after, fell over, supported by the arms of his devoted wife, who gently laid him down, his head resting on a pillow. His physician was soon with him, restoratives were given, but all to no purpose, as the end came quickly. Hosts of friends share with the devoted wife and daughter in their sad bereavement.
