WILLIAM H. SHORT

William H. Short of Novato, a retired tugboat captain and sailboat designer, died Saturday of a massive heart attack at Marin General Hospital. He was 65.

Mr. Short, a native of San Francisco, lived in Marin for many years, the past 13 years in Novato. He was a tugboat captain for the Santa Fe Railroad for 30 years before retiring about four years ago.

He designed the Pelican class sailboat, a craft with a Chinese junk sail and a sampan bow. Since 1960, about 45,000 blueprints for two versions of his craft had been sold.

Mr. Short is survived by two daughters, Peggi Short [of] Sebastopol and Laurie Short of Novato; two sons, Douglas Short of San Anselmo and Bruce Short of Larkspur; two former wives, Muriel Short of Larkspur and Catherine Short of Sebastopol; and a grandchild.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Community Congregational Church in Tiburon.
