Old Tomales Resident Called By Death
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Johnston, of Tomales, died at her home there last Wednesday at an old age. The funeral was held last Friday at Tomales, and was attended by many old friends and relatives of the deceased, who brought flowers that completely covered the burial plot. Mrs. Johnston was born in New York May 16, 1852.
After living in Pennsylvania with an aunt until she was 14 years old, the girl went to Wisconsin, where seven years later, she was married, and in the fall of 1863 the couple left New York and came to California via the Panama. Mrs. Johnston has lived in Tomales since that time.
Two daughters survive her. They are Mrs. Ella Jorgensen and Mrs. Hattie Fairbanks, both of Tomales. She was also the mother of the late Mr. Mercie Cornett.
Mrs. Johnston was one of the first members of the Tomales Rebekah Lodge, joining in 1878.
The grandchildren are Leon Cornett, Mae Cornett, Caso, Mercie, Wilson, Louis, Evelyn and Frances Fairbanks. The great grand children are Frankie and Teresa Caso.
