HENRY J. O’CARROLL

Henry J. O’Carroll of Tiburon, longtime mining engineer, died yesterday at a local hospital.

O’Carroll, 71, had suffered a skull fracture after falling Nov. 20 while walking near his home at 7 Reed Ranch Road, according to the coroner’s office.

A native of Cork, Ireland, O’Carroll came to this country as a child and was reared in Nevada, Utah and California.

He received bachelors and masters degrees in mining at Stanford University in 1925 and 1927 respectively. Since then, he had worked on mining projects in Canada, Mexico, South American and the United States.

He had lived in Tiburon since 1971.

He was a member of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, the Society of Mining Engineers of the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the American Society for Metals.

Survivors include his wife, Alice E. O’Carroll; a son, William O’Carroll of San Rafael; a brother, Francis Carroll (sic) of San Francisco, and two sisters, Mrs. Perry Downs of Ventura, and Mrs. Arthur Dingle of Whittier.

A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated tomorrow at 2 p.m. at St. Hilary’s Catholic Church in Tiburon followed by private burial. Rosary will be said today at 8:15 p.m. at the Russell and Gooch Funeral Home in Mill Valley.

The family has asked that memorial gifts be made to the School of Earth Sciences of Stanford University or the St. Hilary’s Church Improvement Fund, Tiburon.
