SMITH, Leonard Henry, 84, passed away October 18, 2001. Chapel of the Hills, San Anselmo, 415-453-8440.


Leonard Henry Smith
Passed away on October 18, 2001, in San Rafael, at the age of 84. Born September 21, 1917 in Saratoga, California, he spent most of his life as a California resident. He lived with his wife Irene in San Rafael. Leonard was a pastor in Kentucky, North Carolina, and Northern California. He was the son of a California pastor and began his ministry in his college years. In his retirement he devoted much of his time to mission trips including Mexico, Korea, Guatemala, Chile, and Jamaica. At the time of his death, he was an active member of the Marin Covenant Church in San Rafael, where he served on the Missions Committee. In addition to his professional career, Leonard was a constant volunteer for Christian ministries. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying all kinds of fishing, swimming, boating, and camping. His other hobbies included making and playing musical instruments, computer, and travel. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Irene Anderson Smith of Ferndale, California. He is also survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Shera and Rick Melick, Jr. of Mill Valley, California, and Corinne and Bob Gier of Darby, Montana; his three grandchildren and their spouses: Rick and Joy Melick of Greenbrae, California; Krisiti and Michael Ent of San Pablo, California, and Karen and Darren Draeger of Mill Valley, California. The Smiths also have four great grandchildren, Richard and Nathan Melick of Greenbrae, and Anna and Michael David Ent, of San Pablo. Leonard was the son of Lloyd and Emma Bielstein Smith. He had two brothers, now deceased, Lloyd and Ivan. He was devoted and exemplary husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. His greatest pleasure was time spent with his family. The family is requesting that memorials be sent to the Missions Program of Marin Covenant Church, 195 No. Redwood DR., San Rafael, CA 94903 (415/479-1360) Funeral services and internment will be at Valley Memorial Park, 650 Bugeia Lane, Novato, CA (415/897-9609), Monday, October 22, at 1:30 p.m. Arrangements are by the Chapel of the Hills Mortuary.
