LELAND J. AHERN
Retired police officer
Leland Ahern, a 24-year veteran of the San Rafael Police Department, died May 25 at his home in Novato. He was 67.
Mr. Ahern was a San Rafael patrolman who knew his beat well, said San Rafael police Sgt. Jim Kelly. “He was a good, old-fashioned, old-time San Rafael policeman.”
“He was the original community-type police officer. He was basically doing community policing before there was that term,” Kelly said.
A native Californian, Mr. Ahern was a member of the Retired Police Officers Association, the Elks and the AARP.
He retired from police service in the late 1970s, Kelly said.
He is survived by his daughters, Theresa M. Madsen and Debra Ann Vallerino of Tonopah, Nev.; and his sister, Betty J. Lyons of North Fork. He is also survived by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be May 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Keaton’s Redwood Chapel in Novato. A rosary will be said 7 p.m. May 28 at Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Elks BPOE Lodge, P.O. Box 150789, San Rafael 94915-0789.
