Tiny Daughter Of Visitors Succumbs
Leona Berhow, six-weeks-old daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Robert L. Berhow of Westhaven, near Eureka, died last night of suffocation while riding in the back sear of her parents car en route from Mill Valley to Novato, Coroner Frank Keaton said today.
The infant was the granddaughter of Mrs. E. B. McNear of Tiburon. Mrs. Berhow is the former Velma Little, Keaton said.
The Berhows had arrived at a Novato motel last night from Westhaven and at about 9 p.m. drove to Mill Valley with the baby in a basket in the back seat of the car, Keaton said.
He said the parents told him they checked frequently during the ride to make sure the baby was all right, and that on the return trip to Novato about 11 p.m. the baby had been quiet.
When they arrived at Novato, they said something seemed to be wrong with the baby, and they called a doctor, who pronounced the baby was dead when they arrived at his office a few minutes later, Keaton said.
Following an autopsy today, the cause of death was officially fixed as “aspiration of vomitus, secondary to status thymicolymthaticus, secondary to mild gastroenteritis.”
“Intestinal flu,” was the way the autopsy surgeon summed it up.
Funeral arrangements were pending today while the body remained at the Redwood Funeral Chapel in Novato.
