JOSEPH E. DOWNING

The funeral for Joseph E. Downing, a real estate agent and longtime Novato resident, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Keaton’s Chapel of Marin mortuary in Novato.

Mr. Downing, who was 69, died unexpectedly Monday, April 13, 1987, while visiting his son and grandson in Los Angeles.

He was born in Pennsylvania and had lived in Novato for more than 30 years.

He had been a licensed real estate agent since 1951 and had worked many years as a property appraiser.

Mr. Downing was a past president of the Golden Gate Chapter of the Association of Governmental Appraisers and had worked in the 1970s as an appraiser for the city of San Francisco. He also had worked for several firms in Marin.

He was a member of the Novato Rotary Club and the Musicians Union in Richmond. He had played saxophone and clarinet with a group called Three Nuts and a Bolt.

Survivors are his wife, Mary; two sons, Tony Downing of Las Vegas and Lynes Downing of Murrieta, Riverside County; a stepson, Joey Fameli of Novato; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A daughter, Valerie Caton, died earlier.

The rosary will be recited Saturday before the funeral.

Burial will be in Valley Memorial Park cemetery in Novato.

The family asked that memorial donations be sent to a favorite charity.
