Prison Aide R. A. Davis Succumbs
Robert A. Davis, a San Quentin Prison correctional officer since 1938, died in a local hospital last evening. He was 53.
Davis, a resident of San Rafael, became ill at the prison Friday and was hospitalized Saturday. He had been back to work only about three weeks after a long illness.
He was born in Spokane, Wash., later lived in Montana, and while a high school youth came to San Francisco. He was a salesman for the Lucas Valley Dairy for four years before he joined the San Quentin staff.
In 1947 Davis was promoted to sergeant, and a year later became a lieutenant at the prison. He was a past president of the San Quentin Chapter of the California State Employees Assn. He was also a member of the San Quentin Employees Mutual Benefit Assn.
Davis is survived by his wife, Elise, at the family home at 104 Jewell Street. They had no children.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Keaton’s Mortuary in San Rafael. Inurnment will be private.
